The
Right Approach to Breathing
Good singing is the result of good breathing. Breathing is very important because it helps improve your vocal sustainability. An abundant supply of air with regulated outflow will help you sing sustained notes with ease. Breathing is simply the inhalation and exhalation of air. Normally, when we inhale we feel that our stomach contracts and when we exhale, we feel that our stomach expands. You see this is not logical. Let me explain. Consider your car tyre. When you inflate, the tyre expands; when the tyre is flat (no air), it contracts. It should be the same as our stomach. When you inhale, it should expand and when you exhale it should contract. This is the right approach to breathing in preparation for your singing. Breathing Exercises There are several breathing exercises found in my Course "Learn How To Sing Professionally In Just Three Months." In this issue, I will give you one that will help you control and regulate your airflow. "Blow the candle" Imagine that your right index finger is a lighted candle. Hold and place the lighted candle at approximately one inch from your mouth. In order to do this easily, touch your chin using your thumb. The idea here is for you to feel the airflow on your index finger as you exhale. Are you ready? Now, I want you to inhale through your nose and try to store as much air as you possibly can. Then as you exhale slowly, blow the candle with just enough pressure so as not to put off the light totally but rather bend it to approximately 45 degrees. Continue blowing until air runs out. As soon as you run out of air, stop and rest for about 15 seconds. Be sure to drink water before you repeat the exercise. Do this as many times as you can within a maximum period of 5 minutes. Please don't overdo it. At first, maybe your sustainability will only last for 5 seconds. However, aim for a longer sustainability as you go along. Maybe you want to set a goal to increase your sustainability to 10, 15, up to 20 seconds. The best time to do this breathing exercise is early morning upon waking up, at night before going to bed, and 15 minutes before your singing practice. __________________________________ DISCLAIMER NOTE: To avoid any medical complications, consult your health professional before you perform this exercise.
